Florida Man Charged After Five Puppies Found Dead in Crystal River Home
A Florida man who authorities say was formerly involved in breeding German Shepherds has been arrested after five puppies were reportedly found dead inside his Crystal River home.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 52-year-old Ryan Michael White. Authorities said White was the former owner of a business known as Elite German Shepherds and was the sole caretaker of the animals living at the property.
White is facing five felony counts of animal cruelty, along with charges connected to driving with a suspended or revoked licence. The criminal charges remain allegations unless proven in court.
Deputies Responded to a Well-Being Check
The investigation began when Citrus County deputies responded to a residence on West Sandra Street for a well-being check.
Authorities said no one answered when deputies knocked on the door. While examining the property, they noticed an open window and detected strong odors described as decay, animal waste and ammonia coming from inside the home.
Deputies then looked through the window and reportedly saw the decomposed remains of several dogs. Citrus County Animal Control officers were called to assist with the investigation.
Five Puppies Reportedly Found in a Bedroom
According to an arrest affidavit cited by local media, investigators entered a spare bedroom and found five puppies in an advanced state of decomposition.
The conditions inside the residence led investigators to determine that the puppies had allegedly experienced serious neglect while under the care of the person responsible for them.
Authorities did not immediately provide detailed information about the puppies’ ages, how long they had been dead or whether veterinary examinations had established their causes of death.
Six Surviving Dogs Removed From Property
Animal Control officers also removed six living adult dogs from the residence.
The animals were transported to Citrus County Animal Services to receive veterinary examinations and any necessary medical treatment. Officials said additional charges could be considered depending on the results of those examinations.
The current health conditions of the surviving dogs and whether they will eventually become available for adoption have not been publicly confirmed.
Former German Shepherd Breeder Arrested
Investigators said White was known locally as a German Shepherd breeder and was formerly associated with Elite German Shepherds.
Authorities contacted White while they were investigating the home. He later returned to the property while driving a vehicle, despite allegedly having a suspended or revoked driver’s licence.
White was arrested on the following reported charges:
- Five felony counts of animal cruelty
- One count of driving while his licence was suspended or revoked
- An active warrant for failing to appear in connection with an earlier suspended-licence charge
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said White had been identified as the animals’ sole caretaker.
Sheriff Calls Conditions Avoidable
Citrus County Sheriff David Vincent described the conditions discovered inside the home as disturbing and avoidable.
The sheriff’s office encouraged residents to report suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect rather than waiting for conditions to become life-threatening.

Investigation Could Lead to Additional Charges
The investigation remains active as authorities await information about the six surviving dogs.
Veterinary findings could help investigators determine whether the animals experienced malnutrition, untreated medical conditions or other forms of neglect. Officials have indicated that further charges may be filed if additional evidence supports them.
White has been arrested and charged, but the allegations have not yet been proven in court. He is entitled to the presumption of innocence throughout the legal process.
